Well yea

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had gotten up early that morning, I felt something was different. I decided to do an early morning round of the mares, they had stayed out last night as it was supposed to be the first fine night this spring, however Tuna was due next week and Z’nana a few weeks after that. It was both of their first foals and they were beginning to show some agitation, they were both looking huge, although Z’nana was undoubtedly the biggest hopefully it was a big Strong Colt from Ronaz but who knew... and well Tuna, her stallion was unknown the cheeky girl pulled a fast one on us.
I pulled on my boots and jacket and went out in my flannies, torch in hand and worried that little wren had gotten into trouble again. Down the lane and to the mares barn first to check on wren and spot in their loose box, all was fine spot gave me a sleepy nicker and wren was snoring lightly under her dams protection. All’s fine, now to the other mares who were all happily dozing under the big tree in Weaners 1. All that’s left are Tuna and Z’nana then id check on the boys... ducking under the fence I strode through the wet grass and towards the Creek Bed Paddock where Z’nana and Tuna had been enjoying themselves. When I got to the gate Tuna had ambled over and demanded a scratch, not seeing Z’nana yet I headed towards the creek leaving Tuna standing near the gate. I crested the hill and gasped. Z’nana stood still sweaty and heaving with blood dried on her hocks, at her shoulder stood a very wobbly foal.
Undersized it looked around with glazed and confused eyes, Z’nana however did not try to comfort her foal, she was too busy snorting and licking the prone body under her nose. I ran closer and dropped the torch, he was tiny and not moving, still slightly warm from the birth his sides steamed but there was no life. I tried everything to get that tiny heart going and those lungs to breathe, but to no avail, he did not move, and when the sun began to come up over the ocean I stopped.
Looking at Z’nana I worried, she was still fretting about the foal nuzzling and nickering trying to help it, however it was the foal that lived that I was worried about. Smaller than normal, the premature birth had made it ever more so, upon closer inspection it was decided to be a filly. The first thing I noticed was the blaze, huge it covered most of her face and right eye, her little chestnut body steamed and wobbled as she fought to remain standing. Coming up beside her I gently turned her and moved her closer so she was able to drink. Both she and Z’nana were unsure with Z’nana shuffling around forcing me to go to her head to quiet her, the filly began to drink the vital colostrum that had been denied to her brother, I was thankful Z’nana had enough milk to feed the poor thing.
After the Filly had drank her fill it was time to try get them back to the barn and into the foaling stall, going back to the colt I wondered how I would get Z’nana to leave him... she seemed distressed still, standing protectively over him while gazing into the trees and over the meadow watching for danger. Sighing I moved him, he was so light, I dropped the torch into my pocket and stooped heaving his body up and into my arms and then finally across his dams withers. We then began the slow walk back, with me trying to keep Z’nana steady while moving and the frequent stops so the filly could rest. We finally made it to the barn and I put Z’nana and her foal in the first birthing box, unsure what to do with the colt I lay him in the corner and left Z’nana to say goodbye and ran to the office and phone.
A hurried conversation with the vet and an anxious 20 minutes later and Jhon our vet and close friend arrived. I heard his truck approach and park and then the hurried crunching on the dirt as he ran inside, a quick chuckle about both of us being in PJ’s and then down to business. Jhon eased into the stall with Z’nana giving him a quiet snuffle and a check over both dam and foal, who has said were doing surprisingly well considering the trauma of the birth and the premature size of the foal. He then bent over the colt that lay prone in the corner. After the examination Jhon stepped out of the stall, he thought the fact that it was her first pregnancy and that there were twins had caused a problem in the pregnancy and one of the foals, most likely the colt had gone into distress and caused the early birth.
We stood outside the stall and watched them all, Jhon remarked on the Filly’s weird conformation, wondering how, with parents like Ronaz and Z’nana, she was such an odd looker. It was only then that I really looked at her, hidden by her huge blaze her head was distinctly roman nosed... almost looking like a camel. Huge floppy ears dwarfed a tiny fuzzy mane and a long high set neck, a Short back and sloping hind quarters led to shortish knobbly legs, and her right eye that was covered with the blaze was blue. We both stared, but as we watched she looked back at us with long ears pricked with concentration and whinnied. We both laughed, ‘well no matter how she looks she certainly has character!’ laughed Jhon.
In RL complications can arise from the conception of twins, it is common to have one or both die as well as boding a serious risk for the mother. Complications are common and it is extremley lucky that in this case the complication did not result in the death of all three. please i am not pro death but i want my HARPG to be realistc, please respect that!.
and no dead baby jokes!
