Complications

Well, i almost shat myself this time when the freaking number generator spat this out.. but now i have known about it for a darn while. So im at peace with it, just try to do the same and yes my stable is real, deal with it!

Rios pregnancy had gone without a hitch, and our champion mare had balooned with the impending call of mother hood. Her coat shone and she looked fat and happy, liquid brown eyes now melting anyone in their sight.

It was currently winter and Rio had been snug and cosy in the foaling stall for a few days now, and the farm was on high alert.

It was during a particurlaly nasty storm that had blown in from the west and was playing havoc with the electricity. As the lights flickered and dimmed Rio went into labour.

Like a demon emerging from hell the foal fought back and after hours of labour she hadn't got anywhere. Jhon was called and sfter he carefully manipulated mum and bub she was on track. Dark feet and a snip and star emerged as one of the biggest colts he had seen slid out.

Wiggling he thrashed in the straw before swaying around and woozily squaling at his dam.

Rio nickered and grunted as she struggled to stand. Finally getting to her feet the young mother stood stiff legged and sore as she snorted and began licking her colts dark hide.

Jhon smiled and gave the colt a once over. Large with strong legs and large fuzzy ears. On first glance he had appeared black but after he dried he turned out to be a dark bay and his flashy blaze seemed to glow in the light.

Happy that both mother and foal we settling we set down to watch and Jhon went to go clean himself. Happy Ryan sat in his cot listening to the happy pair, colt suckling and Rio snuffling and looking tiredly at him.

Exhausted he felt his eyes droop, barely noticing as he dozed off.

Much later he woke up to a cramp in his neck, sitting up he glanced over the stall door. The Colt had fallen asleep and Rio was stretched out behind him. A quick smile flitted across his face before he realised that Rio wasent breathing.

He grabbed the phone and screamed to jhon, before rushing into the stall scooting past the colt to lean over the prone mare.

Blood pooled and her legs stiffened Rios eyes were closed and her glorious mane still damp and plastered to her neck.

Jhon said it was a rupture and there was no way we could have prevented it. the strain of the labour had caused a tear in an artery and she had bled out.

Of all the mares to have this happen and on her first foal. Ryan hasn't forgiven himself for falling asleep though the rest of the staff have remained nothing but supportive.

The Colt remained in the stall, having recieved the vital colostrum he had some strength but the feeding began shortly after. Confused he stood on spindley legs before sniffing the body of his dam.

He seemed to have inherited his mothers personality as he grew to relish the attention given to him as the staff struggled to keep him going. Though it seemed he had recieved his sires strength and fire to live as the clawed onto life and would not let it go.

After he survived the first few days we believed he was out of the woods. Rio was burried in the paddock under her favourite orange tree.

The staff have been listless and even the horses seem quieter as all focus turned to the colt.

He had a lot to live up to.

History: Born late one night in the middle of a storm, his Dam had complications before passing away leaving him orphaned at a young age. He has faught back and has a strong will to live.

He seems to have gotten his sires luck at birth, i was shocked when it came up with complications, more so when it was Rio and then when she didnt survive. Kinda creepy!
