Causing a Racus

Description

Well isnt she a tool! ;) but a fun one!

Racus is a hilarious addition to our stable and i love including her in stories.... boy is she a weirdo.. and if you dont want your stuff stolen, try bribing her with a mint! she loves pepermints ;)

----------------------------------------

Racus was trouble.

Sure she had grown up, finally filling out into her ears and looking like a real horse instead of a mutant stork but her attitude and kleptomaniac tendencies hadn’t waned. In fact she had become such a hoarder we began to worry the police would one day turn up. From earrings to shoes she had grown quite a pile, and although we returned all stolen items when we could the pile seemed to get bigger and bigger.

Her track work was astounding, and although she now viewed the gate as a game she seemed to enjoy the idea of picking of the other horses as she happily bounded past. The lanky chestnut and white filly was most often seen bounding around like a jackrabbit, normally with her tongue lolling out like a dog. Life was always interesting with her on the gallops.

After she managed to chew through her neighbours halter for the 3rd time we began to step up her training, preparing her for her first race.

Nice and short the Goodward Plate was the perfect starting point. So we sent Racus up to Belmont where Syd was waiting. Even with the talented Cassidy Jenkins up Racus continued to cause trouble. It started in the post parade where she managed to snatch a particularly feathery had of a rather large matron who had leaned a bit too far over the barrier.

After Syd and the outrider finally managed to convince Racus that she needed to drop the hat the crowd was almost crying with laughter. Red faced and utterly embarrassed our group took the jibes and jokes from several other locals as our miscreant happily headed off to the gate.

She loaded well and broke smooth but sat towards the back, tongue dangling and ears flopping. As they rounded the final turn our flashy filly seemed to have a rocket under her tail, she screamed down the strait and won by an astonishing 4 lengths. No one was laughing at our girl now.

Inspired by her incredible speed we entered her in the Farnley Stakes, 7F and we wanted to see if Racus could hold her speed at a longer distance. So the morning dawned to find an empty stall.

Shit.

She was eventually found happily sleeping under a tree right next to the track... and interesting start to the day. She seemed to behave well until they tried to load her, then the fun began. Her trouble was that she was so smart, and eventually they managed to load her, though not without some rather descriptive swearing from her handler.

She broke well again and settled on the rail, we then began to worry. Racus looked boxed in and even though Syd tried to navigate her out no holes opened. As they rounded the turn, daylight opened a head and Syd tapped Racus for the first time. She seemed to explode and shot off after the leader. After a hard chase Racus and a big Bay flashed under the line together. Photo finish revealed our painted wonder had inched her nose just in front.

We partied hard that night!

Next up it was the WH Stocks Stakes, her first G3 and it was on our home track. Moonee was decked out for the local filly and Racus seemed to relish the attention, mainly by grabbing the photographer’s bags from under their noses. There were quite a few angry words before we managed to convince Racus to give the contraband back.

She seemed to behave as she loaded and then broke cleanly to sit on the outside, she moved perfectly and the crowd roared with her, and she snatched another victory. This time the margin was an impressive 5 lengths, we had a champ on our hands.

Next it was up to Rosehill for the Gloaming Stakes, at 9F we were still testing Racus’ ability to stay. She behaved that morning; weird as it was, and when she broke she broke perfectly. Going up the straight she pulled away as usual but not expected was the big bay filly who took off after her. The pair roared down to the line but it was the big bay that crossed first.

Racus was a pain for the next few weeks as we tried to get her to focus again, gone was our happy larrikin who just wanted to play. Instead we had a cranky filly that had begun stealing with a vengeance... anything not bolted down disappeared. So at our wits end we entered our furious monster into another race, because if that didn’t work we may have to call the cops.

Racus glared at the horses, pinned her ears at the media and well let’s just say the crowd didn’t cheer for her that morning. Randwick was never really prepared for what happened that morning.

What a fiasco. She broke well but on the straight a familiar shape scooted after her. The big bay filly from the Gloaming had begun to burst and soon caught up. Racus pinned her ears and snatched victory, literally away. It turns out when your horse steals the other jockeys whip and bolts away its interference and you get disqualified...

A very smug and cocky Racus was caught, whip still in mouth and led away in shame. Not exactly what we had in mind but after she seemed happy enough after what she thought was a win.

Her gentle thievery began again, the pile seeming to be made mostly of hair ties and socks; we still don’t know how the heck she gets these things.

So thinking of the last race we wanted to end her season on a good note, or at least not a disqualification... So one last race on our home track was in order.

The Crystal Mile, Racus’ first G2 race and hopefully a good experience for her. She broke well and pushed into the mid pack before settling. The pace was faster than she had seen before, and she was pushing to maintain the pace. As they rounded the final turn Syd nudged her around and they began to creep up the side of the pack. The straight saw her scooting down to the line, tongue lolling.

Legs pumping, breathing hard her bicoloured coat darkened with sweat she strained as another filly chased her down. The big grey was bearing down on her and we were all at the edge of our seats. Photo finish and luckily Racus was over by a head.

A very proud Racus pranced into the winners circle sides dripping and ears pricked. The Chairman presented us with her trophy and we all posed for a photo. As the people milled about Racus saw something she liked, and as the camera clicked she reached over and nabbed the Chairman’s Toupee. The photo is now proudly bolted outside her stall.
